Top Rated Hair Loss Doctor in Philly

Hair loss, also referred to as alopecia, is due to the body’s hair production cycle being interrupted. This can be a result of genetics, aging, medical reasons or other factors. When someone experiences hair thinning and hair loss, there are many minimally-invasive and advanced hair restoration options to choose from that restore a healthy hairline.

Certified by the American Board of Dermatology, Dr. Marissa Milchak, a Philly Hair Transplant specialist provides patients in Philadelphia with the best hair treatment methods available.

The Hair Growth Cycle

Our hair is made up of protein known as keratin, and our hair grows in a cyclic pattern of growth and rest. There are four phases of hair growth:

  1. Anagen (growing phase)
During this phase new hair is formed and pushes the club hair up the follicle and out. In the anagen period, hair grows about half an inch each month. This phase is active for 3 to 5 years.
  2. Catagen (transition phase)
The transition phase lasts for around 10 days. During this phase growth slows and the outer root sheath shrinks and attaches to the root of the hair and forms the club hair. This, the end product of final hair growth. Approximately 3% of all hairs are in the catagen phase at any given time.
  3. Telogen (resting phase)
The resting phase lasts for about 3 months. During which time, hairs start to form in follicles.
  4. Exogen (shedding phase)
This period lasts between 2 to 5 months. As new hairs begin to grow, old hair sheds and it’s normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs a day.
